Pick n Mix Sweets

pick n mix sweets (aka pick and mix, or penny sweets)!

I wonder who coined the term pick and mix - or pick n mix as it became known?

Who can forget standing in Woolies (other general purpose stores are available!)... plastic scoop in hand... wondering which of the colourful sweets to add to our paper bag? Or watching in horror as the urchin in front picked his nose and then proceeded to make his selections without the use of the scoop. You'd be amazed at some of the things that I used to see in in the clear perspex tubs (or maybe you wouldn't!)

So maybe it's just as well that this particular institution is pretty well a thing of the past these days... and that it has been replaced by the fab, hygienic pick and mix of our online sweetshop. Either way, we have loads of great pick and mix sweets at A Quarter Of... to take you back in time so you can enjoy your favourites and reminisce at the same time!

Here's a selection to whet your appetite... but our whole online sweetshop is really just one huge pick and mix counter!

Probably the most exciting part of our childhood sweet was the penny sweets (that's what I think of whever someone mentions the term "pick n mix") section.  I use that term loosely because back in the early 1970's it was more accurately the halfpenny or ha'penny sweets section, because you could frequently buy 2 of your favourites (or even more) in return for your big shiny penny,  Mind you that was back in the days of predecimilisation prior to 1971, so some of the treats were only a farthing each in old money.

So in many ways "penny sweets" has always been a relative term.  But the joy and variety they bring is unchanging.  There are so many to choose from: strawberry laces, foam shrimps, fried eggs, Fruit Salads, Blackjacks, foam mushrooms, cola bottles and gobstoppers to name but a few.

It was always such a tough decision to work out which of multi-coloured, traditional confectionery favourites would find their way into your little white paper bag.  And the fact that they were so inexpensive meant that you could choose a whole selection of different sweets - and then the big decision was the order that you ate them in.  Of course you also had to take into account which of them would, if left for too long, become all sticky and fuse with your paper bag.  mind you, if you were anything like me, they didn't hang around for long enough for that to be too much a problem!

Feast your eyes on our range of old-fashioned penny mix sweets.  If they still make them, we stock them... and you can enjoy them again.  Can you feel your mouth watering?  Go on... treat yourself today!
