Whatever happened to... Turkish Delight?
Turkish Delight Query
I used to get a small bar of Turkish Delight wrapped in gold foil. It was smaller and chewier than the Fry's bar and was more red in colour. It was my favourite sweet when I was a child. I think it disappeared during the late 70's or early 80's? I can't remember who made it.
Many thanks

Oh my goodness Shelagh - you have just reminded me of the damp foggy mornings walking to school and calling into the little sweet shop on the corner of a row of terraced houses(in Lancashire), get my penny out of my pocket and splash out on a spearmint bar. Only once a week of course, boy were they yummy, I can taste it as I sit here.
Does anyone also remember sugared peanuts? They were a special treat about (6d a quarter) - much the same as sugared almonds but obviously peanuts in the middle instead. Absolutely gorgeous. Are they still available? I can't find them anywhere.

Sensations were made by Needlers - a factory in Hull. My friend's Gran had a friend who worked there and when we were young there was always an abundance of Sensations round at her Gran's house.
Sadly Needlers closed down a few years ago.

Eddie - Wispa has been replaced by Dairy Milk bubbly, which is thinner and not half as good.
I can't find a chocolate egg like Creme egg but could split in half and each half had caramel and marshmallow. Around in late 80's early 90's. Last memory was using the last of my school money to buy one and dropping half in the road. I was gutted!

Shelagh and Belinda,my husband Colin and I were only talking about spearmint lattice chew bars the other week. We can both taste them as we talk about them, but we haven't seen them for years. I don't think they even had anything written on the wrapper to say who made them. What a pity. They were FAB!

i would love to have some spanish gold chewing tobacco it was strands of coconut coloured brown in a realistic "baccy" pouch lovley yumyumyum

Grace
the "Japs" your dad mentioned were i think "Coconut Japs." These were cubes of coconut (oxo cube sized) with various coloured exteriors which were 'toughened' somehow by the colour glaze so they did not lose their shape.
I love all things coconut (like the mushrooms) that's how i remember them.

What about Secret's??? The chocolate bar with the Chocolate Marshmellow centre,
Gambit... Dark Chocolate
Liquorice Sandwiches, these were about 1 inch long with 2 thin slices of Liquorice and in between was a coloured flavoured centre either yellow, orange, purple, green...?? They were yum and no body makes them anymore! I could go on and on about sweets....

I remember Gambit bars very well. They were blended milk and dark chocolate and had a really unique taste and texture.
The TV ads were hand-drawn line animations and the music, although I can't remember it exactly, was kind of new-agey and laid back.
I ate the things whenever I could get my mits on them. They only had a very short run, though. Am I right in thinking they were only around for less than a year?

Linda, I think the honeycomb bars you are talking about may have been called "Puff Candy". One of my great uncles used to buy all us kids one on a Saturday. This was probably about 20+ years ago.

I was trying to explain chewing tobacco to my boyfriend just the other day. He didn't believe me. Joked that my dad must have been giving me real bacco telling me it was a sweet just to shut me up!

Everyone is bringing back great memories for me, from the school tuck shop, to sneaking out of school to buy potato puffs. I thought these were the greatest! Old English Spangles were the best too. My favourites came out of the local sweet shop penny box. Kali, licorice pipes, and the square fizzy ? They were all different flavours and I used to pop them in water to make a drink. Better when they melted in your mouth though, it foamed up! What great days.

I also used to like the Fry's Five Boys. Frys also came out with little chocolates in their own box at Christmas. Shaped like a chocolate covered cherry but dark chocolate and fruit cream inside. Yum!
It's a shame that English chocolate changes names. I like to think of the old names like Glees, when I was waiting at the bus stop in Sheffield. They were a form of skittles but I like the English flavours better. Just so much to remember. I get most of my stuff from an English store in Salt Lake City, Utah which is 200 miles away. Still there is alot I can't get.
Thanks for the great thoughts!

Does anyone know if joosters are still being made? I haven't seen them in any shops for months and have tried everywhere to find them!

Can anyone remember Mojos, the mint ones were gorgeous. I seem to remember a big chewy bar which I think was called a Banana Split, think it may have had toffe in it too and that there was a strawberry one also. Sure that there was a sweet called a Country Bar too, which had biscuit and raisins in it and came in a foil packet with a pink gingham style overwrap.

Can anyone remember Take-Twos, cant remember who made them, but there was two halves of of a chocolate bar with a fondant centre in each one. There was definitely a marzipan flavoured one and I think an orange one. The advert had people hiding in cupboards etc... while they tried to eat them.

I remember Crackerjack.I remember in the early 70s as a child of about 5 or 6, i used to go to the ice cream van on a Saturday evening and buy a box of Crackerjack and a bag of Gold Dust which came in a brown bag with string on the end.Think they cost me about 10p in all.Happy Days!

Hi, Can anyone remember the name of a chocolate bar thet had a mallow centre like that in a walnut whip and the chocolate on the outside was like thin strands, like a "cage". It was about the size of a Mars bar.
They were out about ten years ago. Absolutely delicious
Posted by: Duncan on October 25, 2006
Does anyone remember a long stick of twisted toffee with chocolate all the way through the middle and when you sucked it it looked like a pencil.?I think it was made by the same company that made barley sugar twists....they were always side by side in jars at my local sweet shop in the 50's/60's
Posted by: Susan on October 26, 2006
Please can someone tell me where I can find a coffee walnut whip?! It's my mum's birthday and I said I'd try and get her one but I've got an awful feeling they no longer exist!

You can still get sweet peanuts in a couple of little newsagents in Lancashire but sadly they are not as good as they used to be. I know they used to be hard but now they are solid you could break your teeth on them and there is hardly any peanut in them. Is this the same everywhere or just were we live?.
This has brought loads of lovely memories back espescially of the old newsagents that used to sell everything, it is now a sunbed shop!!!

I remember Gambit.
The ads had a wee animated guy taking a rainbow out of the sky to form a bridge and solve a particular bridgeless-cliff problem!

So many sweets and so many memories - I long for the day that the Pink Spearmint Chew Bars are brought back, along with Penny Chocolate Tools, Nutty Bars, Cadburys Milk Tray Bar, Galaxy Counters and Spiras - someone could make a lot of money. Must get a grip...........
Posted by: Sharon on October 30, 2006
I remember the chocolate twists and the barley sugar sticks that i used to suck into a point, the chocolate ones were my faves.
I also remember Bar Six and loved them, Cadburys have brought out a wafer bar which is similar but not as good.
The eggs (caramel & mallow) Charlotte mentioned were absolutely lovely and I used to have them all the time as I don't like the creme eggs.

New to this site and oh what a trip down memory lane. Re: the pink spearmint chewy bar. My grandad used to buy us sweets once a month on payday and it was the only time we had the pink spearmint bars. I could have been no more than 7 at the time.....I'm 37 now!!!
I remember Cabana bars too. Bring back Nutty bars!!! And does anybody remember Trophy bars. A 2 finger chocolate covered wafer bar with crushed peanuts????
Posted by: Debbie on October 31, 2006
I can remember buying sweets which looked like humbug satins but they also had pink and white stipes on them. They had chocolate in the middle too if i remember correctly. Does anyone remember these??. We used to call them Chocolate Cushions but ive no idea what they were really called.
Posted by: Emma on November 2, 2006
Duncan, I think the chocolate bar your refering to was called Secret, I used to love them. Cant remember who made it though, if i remember rightly the mallow centre was not as white as a walnut whip but more the colour of Milky Way Centre.

I have just bought some sweet tobacco from "A Quarter Of" and it brought back memories. Does anyone know if you can still get the small hard liquorice sticks? They were very dark and hard and delicious! I also remember Spearmint chew bars and Old English Spangles which were so much nicer than the ordinary ones.

What ever happend to those yellow chunks of bubbly you used to get in the little cloth bag with a pull cord at the top to close? Goldrush or golden nuggets i think they where called.
Posted by: kepi on November 15, 2006
please please please help! On our long way to cornwall me and my boyfriend were eating our spearmint chews when we both had a flashback to our youth in the 80's about a square chew (like a chewit) that was green and white striped and tasted of mint. What were they called and can i still get them???

My husband remembers a chocolate candy he ate, probably 40 years ago, that was dome-shaped and filled with a white (not liquid ) filling. He's not sure if it came in a box. It was maybe an inch high.
Can you help?

Anyone remember swiskets?
Posted by: sally on November 20, 2006
Re some of the previous posts people have mentioned ovaltine bars and a cadbury's bar that has different compartments of fillings (like a box of chocolates in a bar of chocolate!!) You can still get the chocolate bar in Australia where it is called Cadbury's snack bar. There is another website that imports the snack bar and ovaltine bar and has floral gums too and chocolate bonbons but I don't know if it's fair to post it here so I wont. But hopefully it will hearten some of you that they are still made!!
But does anyone remember a cereal called puffa puffa rice. It had a picture of sweep's girlfriend on the front of the box (from sooty and sweep). It was so much nicer than sugar puffs are -sorry I know it's not a sweet!
