Retro Sweets

‘Tuesday night was comic night.  My sister and I would spend the early evening at our Nana’s, and the excitement began when the comics were delivered at about 5 o’clock.  The glorious sound of those magazines hitting the floor as they came through the letterbox!  We’d get Chick’s Own, then Dandy and Beano, later Girl and Bunty.’

‘I used to read Sunny Stories when I was very small, then I had Girl.  My brother had Eagle.’


‘We were given something called The Children’s Newspaper which was extremely tedious.  Terrible.  We wanted Dancy And Beano, but we weren’t allowed to have them.’


‘I got loads of comics, becausemy mother worked in the local newsagent’s.  They were all last week’s, but who cared.  Therewas Lion, and Eagle, and Rover and Adventure, and then Rover Adventure because they’d merged.  The Bash Street Kids were my favourite.  Lord Snooty.  Keyhole Kate.’
