Sweet Memories

Bizzie Lizzie (or Fizzy Lizzy?) Chewy bar – raspberry flavour, with very fizzy sherbet in the middle, used to be 5p each, and my sister was mad about them!

Choc Italian Creams (Buchanans) & Fruit Creams (Ross’s of Edinburgh) Half Chocolate covered soft (not liquid) caramel – a bit like a very creamy fudge & fondants with a hard shell and melting centre with very natural fruit flavours (the white one (pear) is particularly good.

Boiled sweets in flat square tablets with a delicate flavour, usually dusted with icing sugar, and sold loose by the quarter. I remember them from my school days around 1977, from a tiny little sweet shop.

Chew bar about 5 inches long and half inch wide, I remember them in toffee flavour and a fruit flavour possibly rhubarb and custard. When warm they were really stretchy, my friend and I used to see who could stretch theirs the longest and would have to stand on chairs they were so stretchy…. gross [...]

It was a lolly, similar to Chup Chups, but it was shaped like a whistle, and it worked as one! Used to have great fun annoying adults for miles around, until you bit the end off…

I lived in the Isle of Wight in 1980-1 and used to buy bloody jaspers all the time. A small blackcurrant flavour boiled sweet lolly – themed on haunted houses(?). No idea if it was a regional thing or what. Delicious!

squirrels? You have them with cherry lips. the sister sweet, were in lots of flavours and were kind of round with flat bottom?? They came in a triangular long tube then you could get them by the 1/4 in sweet shops. They were called something else but I can’t for the life of me remember [...]

Pink Pillows (I think… at least that’s what we called them!) Came ONLY from Forbouys chain of sweet shops in the 1980′s(Fieldway, New Addington, Croydon, Surrey – inparticular). Round flat fruit lollies, quite old fashioned, has the fruit on it, a bit like boiled sweet kinda rock sliced up to make lollies.

Can’t remember the name! Paper-wrapped, fruit-flavoured (ie in various bright colours) boiled sweets which were disc-shaped, about the size of an old penny (or a bit bigger).There was a slight hollow on one side of the disc?

It was like chocolatey lumps….Mum used to call it “deck shavings” it was broken m&m’s and other chocolatey lumps and powder and was my favourite sweet ever. I have not seen it since I was 13 years old (1994)
