by michaelp

Hi Does anybody there remember a sweet called ‘old maid’. I have seen a reference to it on a chatboard about Belfast history. I’d be grateful if you could tell me what it is – driving me mad! Thanks Lorraine

Don’t know about Old Maid, but I remember a chocolate covered caramel dubbed ‘Merry Maid’being liberally dispensed by my relatives in Northern Ireland in the 60′s – 70′s. The wrapper featured a very jolly and wholesome looking milkmaid of a distinctly Alpine appearance

Does anybody remember mint (and orange I think?) Sensations? They were half-spheres of boiled sweet that were coated in chocolate. Maybe they had more chocolate inside? I remember getting a handful once (they were individually wrapped – shiny wrapping but not clear) when I was really small and I LOVED them but never ate them – or found them again :(
Does anybody remember Mini the Minx bars as well? Or Dennis the Menace bars come to think of it?

  7. Louise remembers: -

Does anyone remember some small, gold pieces of bubblegum which I think came in a drawstring bag and may have been called gold dust?

    Hi Lorraine …

Funnily enough, I came to the “Whatever happened to … ??” section to see if anyone had posted anything about Copbanas – and you had !!!

Nope, you’re definitely not dreaming them :-) … they were just as you described: coconut and cherries – and something else chewy ?!! – wrapped in a gorgeous creamy chocolate. Probably around the size of a Topic; not terribly big but enough to be totally gorgeous. Used to love ‘em :-)

    Guy

  16. gb remembers: -

    re cabanas:
no you’re not dreaming! they were way better than bounty bars. does anyone remember / know what happened to “double agents”? they were boiled sweets with a squidgy centre and they were around the same sort of time as “spangles”…

    Hi there,

Can anyone remember a Cereal called ‘Golden Oaties’? I cannot remember which company made them (Might have been Kelloggs, but i’m not certain). They were little cornflake coloured packaged puffs of wheat and they were delicious. Does anyone have a clue what i’m on about. I think the packaging was light blue with a ship on the front. Can anyone shed light to if they are still knocking about anywhere?

    Regards

    Paul Etherington

    Hi all,
could anyone tell me the name of the chewy bar that had half peanuts sticking out of it? I seem to remember it came in a transparent brown wrapper and was log shaped. It was made of soft coconut flavoured toffee. Been bugging me for years. My husband says “Nutty” bars, but I’m not sure…..

  24. CJ remembers: -

Hi! Tried to add this as a new memory, but I keeping getting a “Page Not Found” error so I’ll post this here.

Does anyone remember a chocolate bar made by Cadbury’s called either Sunfruits or Summerfruits? These came out for a short period in the late 1980s or early 1990s (can’t remember the exact year). The bar was similar in appearance to a Cadbury’s Caramel bar in that it had a chocolate exterior with little “compartments”. However, each compartment was filled with a fruity, berry, truffle-like substance. These were responsible for turning me into a tubby teenager with bad skin…nevertheless, I would still smack my granny to taste one again. Nobody I know seems to remember them either – my friends and family think I’m delusional, but I can remember scoffing them two at a time as a youngster. OK, I’m a little unsure of the name, but there has got to be someone else out there who remembers them too.

  25. caz remembers: -

I remember the cadbury choc bar which fruit centre but I think it was like frys choc cream only this was called fry’s fives.

  28. Rick Roper remembers: -

    Re: Golden Oaties

Paul – I remember Golden oaties as well. They were lovely. Made by Quaker, and suddenly disappeared around the late ’80s as far as I remember. I still have some of the glow-in-the-dark badges they used to include in the packs.

    Rick Roper.

  29. Teresa remembers: -

I was going through the whatever happened to? and couldn’t believe someone else was wondering what happened to Galaxy Counters. They were absolutely delicious – especially the big tubes you used to get in your christmas stocking. I wish Galaxy would bring them back – they were the nicest chocolate ever – even if I am 40+ I would still buy loads – for me!!

  30. Jenni remembers: -

    Whatever happened to Secret Bars?

Thin strands of chocolate made like a tube shape and it was filled with chocolate mousse?

It had golden wrappers and the advert was a man following a woman with the song ‘ have you seen her’.

I remember eating one on a train once! Heaven!

  31. lucy remembers: -

does anyone remember argentinas/chew chew colas? they were round, white and blue striped cola flavoured, chewy, sweets in a clear wrapper. would like to find out if i can still get them and where i can buy them. cheers

  32. Sarah Laker remembers: -

RE: Secrets bars. They were so yummy. Our next door neighbour used to go to the garden center and bring them back for us as a treat when we were kids. I rembember sliding them out of the cardboard protective layer inside the wrapping. You had to make sure you got all the crumbly bits of chocolate that had fallen off. The soft centre was divine!

  33. rebecca remembers: -

Re Secret Bars : Yeah I remember them and so do loads of my friends..no idea why they were ever discontinued. Miss them so :(

  38. Katie remembers: -

Everyone knows Foam Bananas, right? They aren’t old, but I LOVE them! I remember once when I was on camp with all my school friends there was a tuck shop where you could spend £5 a day, and I bought an entire £5-worth of foam bananas. I needed two friends to help me get them back to the dorm, and we lived off them for the rest of the week. Also, whenever I go to the cinema I get those pick n mix boxes and fill them up with Foam Bananas. Soooo GOOOD!!
I was once holding a jumble sale, and an old lady came up to us and started haggling over one the vases. She kept offering a ridiculously low price, then said “Look dear, I’ll give you 3 Penny Chews for it!” And she held up a few Refreshers. Argh, the old people of today, in my day, wrinklies knew when to be seen and not heard!

  39. ashley hampton remembers: -

Spangles – they were gr8!!! Hard boiled individually wrapped and square – all different flavours with a hole in the middle (well nearly a hole!!!) Also Cadburys Silk bard (yum!!) Milk chocolate with strawberry mousse centre – think the wrapper was blue.

Re Lucy’s November query Argentinas/Chew Chew Colas…Yes Lucy, sadly i remember well, being just a memory.Being born & bred in Lanarkshire near Glasgow the home county of their well known & now sadly defunct manufacturer “King’s Of Wishaw” i used to luv “em as a nipper.King’s had a factory in Wishaw & an aladdin’s cave of a traditional old fashioned sweet shop…aaaggghh the smell bliss, espec.as u walked past their factory right in the centre of the town.Yummy.When King’s production ended (approx.10 years ago? – i think) they sold the rights to some of their sweets incl their most famous Oddfellows to McCowans,Stirlings.who sadly DID NOT resurrect/keep the entire range or they to might be in a better position today than sadly they are!I am sorry to say i do NOT know where these Argentinas can be bought as i do NOT believe they are still made unless any1 can enlighten us,Hope so!

Also remembered are Aztec bars, they were like Mars Bars and I think they had dark and milk chocolate on the outside. Yummy.

  45. claire remembers: -

My grandad used to buy them for me in my 20p bag of penny sweets on a friday. i would love to know if there is a website I could buy them from. thought this site would but hopefully if enough people remember them they might make them again. happy days

  46. Madge remembers: -

Does anyone remember Cadbury’s ‘Stroodles’ sp?. Were bits of apple covered in chocolate and in an apple shaped bag. Is this my imagination? ‘Oodles of Stroodles’ seems to ring a bell in the advert. Also ‘Jelly Mallows’ & MB Bars. Yum! Does anyone else remember these?

  47. Tracey remembers: -

    Hello anyone,
yes i remember splicer bars. They were fruity and all different colours like a rainbow. I ate one before i went head first over my handlebars of my bike on a newly tarred road and lost my face.
I also remember spangles, who else remembers spangles? Pyramints, yes , oh, yes -dark chocolate pyramid s with soft white fondant mint inside, all contained in a devine little pyramid shaped box…oh this site is so fab and nostalgic!!
My favourites were mojos of the icecream van on a sunday, and what about blobs? they were a hard candy sweet with either a fizzy centre or a chewy centre. I remember cola blobs had a fizzy centre and toffee apple blobs had a chewy centre. They came in a tube type packet like rolos come in and had a funny wee face on a “blob”… please get back to me if you remember blobs, as no one else i have spoken to remembers blobs.
