Whatever happened to... Spangles?

Spangles

They came in a pack like tunes and one pack was assorted flavours and the other was old english flavour. They were also shaped like tunes square with a circular dip on either side.....

Ah Spangles, or in my old Junior School in New milton Hants, they were known to a select few pupils as Colemans candys, the Headmaster kept a jar of the sweets on his desk and would give one to each pupil sent to his office for being good, the rest of us went in for a stern talking to.

Spangles

Spangles - Original flavours

Square, boiled sweets. Had a distinctive 'cough sweet' taste. Colours where black, brown & grey (I think!). They then made the fruit flavoured ones - not as good though!

Spangles

"Old English" flavour Spangles.

Tube-type pack of individually wrapped square boiled sweets. I think the paper wrapper was black, can't describe the flavour but it was great!!!

where oh where did my spangles go
I loved old English they were the best you know
and jubblies and sweet tobbaco and lucky bags too
Then of course there was also the great 1d (that's penny for all you young uns) chew,
My poor kids only know the latest sweets
They're not as good as my favourite treats.
So bring back the flavours we used to enjoy
We never suffered from ADHD when we were young girls and boys!!!!

Spangles

A hard boiled sweet - several in a packet - shape and consistency of a tune (as in the cold sweets) but the colour of lucozade (i.e. not too orange but not too brown).

Spangles

You mentioned on the website that Spangles were fruit-flavoured. In fact, the flavour that everyone reminisces about is "Old English" which was an elusive but compelling sweet spicy flavour, reminiscent of cinnamon, anise and cloves. They were superb, and if Mars thought that the fruit ones were what everyone requested, then their market research is as good as their chocolate, i.e. not very. I would cut off my right hand to taste them again.
Well, probably not, but they were delicious.

Galaxy counters and spangles

As a child of the early and mid 70's I was wondering if you happened to know what happened to Galaxy counters I used to eat these frequently in the 70's.The times I used to drag my mom in the sweet shop on the way home from school to get some galaxy counters and spangles-those were the days. They looked like revels but not the assorted centres?

Spangles

Spangles were made by Mars. They were fruit flavoured square boiled sweets - in a tube (like refreshers). They were taken off the market back in the early 1980's but they were re-introduced in the 1990's due to pupular demand. However it seems that the buying public then remembered why they had not bought Spangles in larger quantities first time around and the sweets were withdrawn again.

Spangles weren't in a round tube like Refreshers. They were square with a circular depression on each side - like Tunes still are today. Also, People here have referred to the Old English variety as a single flavour sweet - they weren't. There were a selection of flavours - from memory, butterscotch, apple a mint one??? One of them was a sort of deep red colour. Either way, they were an assortment of flavours, not one "old english" flavour!
