Help!

For years I have been trying to remember one of my favourite sweets from my childhood in the early to mid 70's.

If my mind serves me correctly, they came in a bag like Tooty Frooties, were small and round (about the size of malteesers), were hollow and sugary, with an outside like a moon landscape or a golf ball, came in various fruit flavours, were not particularly chewy, were not hard like gobstoppers and were called............... ?????

Please help and put me out of my misery.

What were they???

Posted on August 30, 2005

If I'm thinking of the same thing, we used to call them golf balls, although from what I recall, they used to come individually and were an essential part of a 10p mix.

Posted by: Tim on August 11, 2006

i think you are thinking of fruit poppets

Posted by: andrea on August 15, 2006

Something different!

Whatever happened to Cherry Mints? I used to love them and the last time I saw them sold in local shops was probably about 8 years ago, at least. They were great! I live in the UK if that helps, so this was not an American sweetie (as far as I know!)

Thanx! :)

Dime Bars are available in most sweet shops, and you can certainly get them in huge bags at any Ikea store in the food shop by the hot-dog and ice-cream area :o)

Posted by: Karen on March 29, 2006

You can get mini Dimes at Ikea huge bags for 2.49

Posted by: crawf on April 11, 2006

The last time I checked Dime bars were being sold by Morrisons in pacs of five so I'm sure there will be other stockists.

Any nuggets of info out there?

I know I have emailed about Plush Nuggets before. Thought it might help if you knew they were made by Lovells and came in a pink and white packet. They were like a white bon bon but soft inside. Maybe someone remembers them and if there is another sweet around that might be similar

Eileen

Posted on August 10, 2005

I have been trying for years to find someone else who remembers Plush Nuggets! I'm 49, and I know they were around when I was at primary school...(blimey, that long ago!)

Posted by: Gill on October 28, 2005

YES I remeber them, they were a treat my Ma always bought me when I was little on our trips to Manchester, I'd be 5 - 10 years old so 30/35 years ago, don't recall seeing them after that time.

Karen

i used to always buy secret bars as a kid and have hunted shops over the years and have never come across them. Is there anywhere that sells them or are you going to bring them out again as they where the best chocolate you have made.

Kind Regards

Oh my god today has been such a funny day, for years I have been trying to explain secret bars to people and no one, not one person knew what I was on about, the blank looks the nodding but not really getting it.... but today I have found others that understand the secret bar! The birds nests type chocolate topping and so on! Bring it back, bring it back..... now if only I could find someone who remembers SKY chocolate icecreams! Chocolate aero/whisper type chocolate bar surrounded by vanilla icecream all held together with another fab layer of chocolate! Yummmmeeee

Posted by: Emma on February 3, 2006

I thought maybe I'd made secret bars up cuz no-one else seems to remember them, they were so yummy! Why did they stop being made???
Becca

Posted by: Becca on April 5, 2006

please can someone tell me why and whether they will be bringing the nestle secret bar back. It was the best bar of chocolate ever. All my mates say it was as well. Bring it back so our children can taste the best bar again

Posted by: Scott on April 14, 2006

i found it on website, but unfortunatly they stopped producing them because the packaging cost so much and they werent getting the sales for them! They were the best remember the cardboard bit they used to come in, ummmm i can taste the chocolate crumbling.....

Posted by: Fi on May 29, 2006

Do you remember Secret Chocolate Bar?

Description: The Secret Chocolate bar was made by Nestlé in the 80's and 90's and was one of the most delicious treats ever. It had a sort of bird's nest chocolate outer with a creamy mousse center similar to the inside of a Walnut Whip. They came in a white protective card sleeve and apparently had a gold wrapper with the word Secret written on it in purple.

The television advert featured an elegant lady sat on a train eating her Secret bar 'in secret' with the accompanying music "I see her face everywhere I go... Have you seen her?..."

Unfortunately the Secret Chocolate Bar was withdrawn from sale due to the high production costs and low volume of sales.

Posted by: Fiona on May 29, 2006

The were awesome. The were discontinued in '96!

Posted by: Kevin on July 6, 2006

I heard that they withdrew them due to costing a lot to produce and obviously not selling enough. They were expensive tho.

Posted by: Leanne on July 16, 2006

I cannot , cannot believe I have found others who remember the Secret bar! I'm so tired of getting that blank look, or the "oh well it must have only been in Ireland" comment when I mention them. They were the yummiest, scrummiest things ever produced, and it's a crying shame that they were haulted in production. If anyone knows where to get them, or if you still can get them, please, please post here and let us all share the pleasure!

Carly

Posted by: carly on October 1, 2006

These were called Shandies and were made by a company called Welches in North Shields, unfortunately they have gone out of business now.

really appreciate some feed back on this. Thanks in advance

Posted by: SarahJane on September 10, 2005

LASER BARS....THATS IT!!!! I've been trying for EVER to remember them. They were basically made from whatever is the inside of Cola Cubes weren't they? You know the hard bit that goes chewy.

Posted by: Sarah on September 10, 2005

I have been searching and longing for laser bars for 21 years

Posted by: Lisa on November 25, 2005

Used to Love Laser bars, would like to see them again mmmmmm like a cola/tizer sort of flavour.
And yes they were like the centre of a cola cube, but hard boiled and about 1cm x 10cm in size

Sshh - Secret

A chocolate bar called 'Secret' made from thin chocolate strips, with a creamy centre, on the market about 15years ago.

Posted on August 8, 2005

They were great, they looked like a chocolate shredded wheat with a marshmallow centre. I've been banging on and on about these for years but nobody believes ne that they ever existed. I'm having the same problem with galaxy truffle eggs, why did they ever stop making them? You can get small ones in celebrations but it aint the same.

Posted by: jasmina Akash on April 19, 2006

loved those bars, have no clue why they stopped selling them. i think they were made by the mars bar people

Black = Liquorice!

Hi
The Lion Sports mixtures, are they the original ones with "black" liquorice or the horrible!! new version with the purple "blackcurrant" flavour
many thanks
mike

Posted on August 8, 2005

I know... shocking isn't it. :(

Posted by: Edd on March 11, 2006

If you liked the liquorice flavour, Lions still do them: Liquorice Gums. I regularly buy mine from my local Morrisons supermarket. If you contact Lion the manufacturer (Westgate, Cleckheaton, West Yorkshire), they will probably give you the name and location of other stockists.

Keeping Tabs

Whatever happened to Tabs? They were little rectangular fizzy sweets (kind of like love hearts) which came in a tiny rectangular packet with multicoloured stripes on it.

Stephanie

Posted on August 8, 2005

I came across a telephone number that might supply these...01732-455-989

I did a search on the most popular search engine (not sure if I'm allowed to post a link but it begins with goo) for : barratts tabs addictive candy

and it came up with a link to that site but it could be a scam just to get you to visit the site cos it says "product not found" I'll phone them 1st thing monday mornin' to check....Mmmmm...I love those little bricks!

Posted by: Saj Khan on November 5, 2005

I know! They were great. We used to buy as many as we could from the village shop. Then sit and slide off the multi-coloured jacket and un-wrap the thin white paper. Then shovel the lot in one go!...BRING BACK TABS!

Posted by: DAN on March 15, 2006

i think they have now been changed to pez or at least they are the closest i have come to finding tabs!!!! bring back all the oldies they were definitely the best.........

A 'Giza's' search....

I loved pyramint as a kid but cant find it anywhere, where did they go?

Posted on August 8, 2005

Pyramint's were THE BEST, everyone still talks about them. Why on EARTH did they get discontinued??? I loved my Pyramint egg for easter, aged 8. I'll never forget it. x2 of the pyramid shaped pyramints and 1 big dark choc egg. Bring them back PURLEEEASE!!

Posted by: Shani on September 15, 2005

I also loved Pyramint. I'm not a fan of dark chocolate but the centre was fab. They changed them into a bar before you stopped being able to get them. It was sort of the shape of Bueno but triangular (obviously). Bring 'em back plz.

Posted by: Julie on October 2, 2005

Yeah where did they go? I loved them have been hunting for years now but to no avail...i miss them...

Hi could you let me know if possible what ever happened to the jolly ranchers?
I really enjoyed them and haven't seen them around for a long time.
Thank you
Marion

Posted on August 8, 2005

Jolly Ranchers were one of the american sweets that never really made an impact in the UK and sales slumped, still popular in america as far as im aware (they we're on sale there last year), you can still but them from american import shops.

Posted by: Edd on March 11, 2006

Splicer

Found out the name of the fruit rainbow chewy bars from the 1970s - they were called Splicer - anyone lese remember these or know of something similar??

Liz

Posted on August 8, 2005

Yes, and I even remember the jingle and the music to the advert! How sad is that!?

It goes like this:

"Splicer is nicer than any I know
The chewiest, newest star of the show"

Posted by: Helen on December 29, 2005

Oh yes indeed - I remember eating many of them as a seven year old, and they had a strapline on the adverts of "Splicer is Nicer" (original!). Does anyone remember those funny multi coloured cardboard hats they gave away with them now and again, which started off flat and you popped up the middle to find a rainbow spiral? They broke within about 5 minutes, but they were fun!

Posted by: Matt on January 9, 2006

thank goodness someone else knows what a
"splicer" is,my family think I've lost the plot!!!thanks for your info from a nostalgic 1970's child.

Posted by: jo on January 15, 2006

Yes I remember Splicer bars and wish you could still get them. They were delicious!

Posted by: Gill on February 13, 2006

I remember these bars. If I remember correctly the advert showed someone walking along the street and everything was completely white. When they took a bit of the splicer bar, everthing surrounding them took on all different colours. The bar used to remind me of squashed up opal fruits. All the good ones seem to fade away

Posted by: sandra D on April 2, 2006

Hi, My friend Lynne was talking about Splicers today and how her husband thinks she made them up...one search later and here we are! Thanks for proving that they were a sweetie from her youth and if by any chance anyone knows if they still exist...pass the info on please...C.x

Treats

Why ever did they discontinue 'Treats' (I think this is the proper spelling) and replace with those awful coloured coatings around peanuts. The old Treats were much better, wasn't it something like 'the sweet that doesn't melt in your hand' - a chocolate covered peanut but crunchy coating not like the bland chocolate covered peanuts of today.

Eileen

Posted on August 8, 2005

I used to LOVE toffee treats, they were scrummy!!

Posted by: chilli on February 19, 2006

i'm in agreement with eileen i think a petition to bring back "peanut treats " is in order they were so much nicer that tose god awful m&m's!!!!! i'd much rather have the creamier choclate anyday , so much more moorish, i could never stop with just one bag mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm peanut treats!!!!!!!!! made by rowntree.......

The nearest thing to Treats these days are peanut M&Ms, though I remember Treats being bigger and always available in big bags at the cinema (before multiplexes in the early 80's)

Posted by: Jamie on June 27, 2006

I have been missing Nutty bars for years and am thrilled that someone can actually remeber them. It was such a wonderful combination especially if you ate all the peanuts off the fudge and then ate the fudge separately, yum!

Posted by: Kath Laws on November 15, 2005

These were one of my favourites, I loved Nutty bars. Would love them now too as don't eat chocolate, but a Nutty bar would go down a treat. Find me one....................

Posted by: chilli on February 19, 2006

I remember these bars got a mention in the first series of "I'm Alan Partridge", when he's listing chocolate bars with Jill. Partridge conclusion - "A good idea, but actually quite painful to eat!"

Posted by: Steve Beaman on January 5, 2007

Hershey's Payday has been noted as similar, but Pearson's Salted Nut Roll (also US only) is almost identical to the Nutty I remember.
