Dinosour Eggs
Dinosour Eggs
A type of large gobstopper, sold individually, that came in a box made to resemble a wooden packing crate. Tangy and delicious! Very common in the early 80s (when I was at primary school), then mysteriously disappeared.
Posted on May 30, 2005
actually, I think you're confusing dinasour eggs with one that was called "The Watermelon". they were similar sizes, but only the watermelon came in the crate box.

Chocolate
Not sure of the name... It was a home made type sweet that you used to see back in the good old days! It was a square lump of milk chocolate which had bits of broken toffee and hazlenuts of some type of nut. It was such a long time ago! It would be pretty easy to make a flapjack tray then just pour the mixture in. Then when set cut with a knife into cubes. Hope you can help bring back this marvelous sweet!

Callard and Bowser Butterscotch
Gold foil wrapped used to come in flat narrow boxes
Posted on May 26, 2005
Yes, I do recall the gold foil wrapped gastronomic delights! Stationed on the outskirts of Paris as a military dependant in the early sixties, I ofttimes had occasion to frequent the small but diverse selection proffered at the canteen at SHAPE (Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe) not but a few miles down the road from Marly-Le-Roi and Grande Terre, an apartment complex where I lived. They carried everything from caviar to chocolate covered ants. Callard and Bowser was with no doubt the best in the world. The trick was to make one piece last the better part of an hour. No matter how badly tempted, I made it a point to savor the slimmest ribbon of remnant until it literally melted upon my tongue. Gone are the days and stowed with care as a fond childhood memory. Alas poor Callard and Bowser, I knew him well!
Posted by: Ron Hovey on May 11, 2006
They were wonderful, my memory is of my Grandma's sideboard, the little gold chunks in a glass dish sat on an off white doilie!(Why did doilies appear everywhere in Granny houses?)
Callards made the best sweets ever!

These were the real butterscotch sweets of my childhood - funny thing, I don't remember Werthers "originals" at all!

These were the real butterscotch sweets of my shildhood - funny but I don't remember those Werthers "originals" at all!

Roses have a hazelnut in soft caramel in milk chocolate. It is shaped a bit like an orange segment but with a flat bottom and is wrapped in purple foil. (Quality street actually had the same thing.)
It isn't the sweet which has disappeared, its the name! 30 odd years ago this chocolate used to have a name - along the lines of "Montilemar" but obviously that is a different sweet altogether - but now is just "hazlenut in chocolate".
What did it used to be called?

Squirrel Logs (I think!)
Toffee log covered in milk choc, sold loose, about 10cm long, there was a picture of a squirrel on the jar (or am I imagining it?) last seen in mid eighties. Cost 2p each I think, which was a bigger investment than normal but was well worth it.

I cannot remember which company made it, but it was in a light-blue wrapper. Everyone said it tasted disgusting, but I liked it. Unfortunately, I cannot find it anywhere in England now.

These are the candies that were sold in bottles a long time ago. They are now made in Malaysia. These are imported into the US and are available at spiced.com.
Posted by: John on March 25, 2006
they sell similar in australia but named 'ovalteenies' as our horlicks type drink is named ovaltine.
Posted by: a nonny mouse on May 5, 2006
Ovaltine and Horlicks coexist in some markets and are not quite the same thing. Ovaltine has chocolate in it (which some Horlicks variants have but not the original). I just found some "Horlicks tablets" on a trip to Hong Kong but I haven't seen either variety in Australian in "tablet" form but I have bought both as powder. I'll have to keep looking.

Chocolate covered banana lollies
They were small lollies (like traffic lights ) but were banana flavoured and covered in chocolate....please find them as were all here in the office drooloing over them!! Thank you!!
Posted on May 4, 2005
I am also enquiring over the chocolate covered lollies - Im sure you used to be able to get them with a cherry lolly inside. Once the chocolate was consumed you managed to get through to the lolly inside. I ordered some chocolate lollies from yourselves the other day but was dissapointed when I found out they were pure chocolate and the surprise didnt lurk inside.
Please find them as they are sought after
