Moffat Toffee

Hard boiled sweet, despite its name. Sweet and slightly sharp, toffee flavour (from Scotland!)

Posted on December 30, 2004

You can get it from the Moffat Toffee Shop or other places around the Borders. My home town, Dumfries, has plenty of newsagents that sell it - loose as well as in the gift tins!

Callard & Bowser Dessert Nougat

Delicious nougat in a box. About 6 individually wrapped pieces. They had glace cherries and almonds and were wrapped in rice paper. absolutely scrummy.

Posted on December 22, 2004

1. The individual wrapping was silver with an edible rice paper under that - no sticky fingers.

2. They weren't glace cherries, they were rose flavoured jellies.

3. No idea what happened to them, but would like to know.

Posted by: David Konopinski on January 12, 2006

i had an old fashioned sweetshop for years. So many lovely sweets have disappeared but the nougat was the delishiest. Has it gone for ever?

Posted by: veronica on January 20, 2006

Can you still buy this or is it gone forever cheers Neil

Posted by: Neil on February 24, 2006

WHERE CAN I BUY THESE DESSERT NOUGAT.

Posted by: BHASKER on July 30, 2006

My grandfather used to buy these for me! Tragically, Suchard, who bought the Callard and Bowser name, have discontinued production of the most delicious sweets ever!! Shame on them!

Posted by: Simon on September 26, 2006

Actually according to the company's releases, was a decison of the american company Wrigley who make chewing gum and who acquired callard and bowser brand last year. Shame indeed.

Posted by: Michael on December 31, 2006

I've been looking for these for years. We used to have them every Christmas when I was a kid. Everything about them was just glorious. Yummo! I had a nasty feeling they must have been discontinued so your post about Suchard confirms it. What were they thinking??? No other nougat comes close.

Posted by: Susan on February 24, 2007

Yes an absolute disgrace. I propose a 'bring back desert nougat' campaign!

Jelly Rings

Jelly Rings - not the fizzy ones!

Woolworths sold them for a while and they are part of the Haribo Star Mix. They look like ladies rings with the jewel in the centre made in a different colour jelly to the rest of the band. The come in the following colour combos: red/orange, yellow/red, green/clear. My life would be complete if you could find them!

Brandy Balls

Common in Northern Ireland. Hard boiled sweets with brandy flavour....

Boiled sweets

Can't remember the name!

Paper-wrapped, fruit-flavoured (ie in various bright colours) boiled sweets which were disc-shaped, about the size of an old penny (or a bit bigger). There was a slight hollow on one side of the disc?

Swizzle Sticks

Orange, strawberry, lemon or blackcurrant sticks of a chewy "fondant" that looked like Edinburgh rock. It wasn't a chew but a soft chalky texture. Used to be sold in the kiddies sweet section. Haven't seen them since later 80's or early 90's.

Everlasting Strip

Industrial strength toffee strip about a foot long. Like CurlyWurly but without the trellis work....

Marabou Delite

My favourite choc bar in my childhood. I think it was made by Barratts. It had a pinkish, soft, not chewy, almost powdery, whipped centre with small extremely crispy pieces the length of a mars but wider and a quarter of the height and a thin choc coating. Light pink wrapper with brownish twirly writing. Nothing like the Delight bar you advertise I dont think.....

Posted on December 13, 2004

I agree these were fab! They were made by Maribou, the company who make Dime Bars. hey came out at the same time but sadly only Dime Bars remain.

Jokers

They were multi coloured candy sticks (about 1/2 inches long) and were so sour that they made some peoples tounges bleed (Possibly why I can't find them anymore!)The last time I saw them was in about 1993/4.....

Lady Janes

A toffee (3.5cm x 2.5cm x 1.5cm) with almonds on one side wrapped in clear cellophane with (I think) pink edging and a pink lady jane promenading with a parasol. My mum's favourites!

Red liquorice

Lovely strawberry flavour, very chewy. A lot more thick/substancial than strawberry laces.

Posted on December 10, 2004

Sweet & Soft Liquorice

They are different shapes like round, diamond, oblong & bertie bassets, these were bought in Crete, Greece under Bassets name and brilliant.....

Posted on December 9, 2004

Exploders

Bright yellow rough coated balls, initial taste was a vile sour bitter lemon that literally made you wince at the taste, then a normal lemony flavour with fizzy sherbert middles....

Cadburys astros

Crispy shell covered chocolate balls VERY YUMMY!!

Posted on December 3, 2004

I wasn't sure if these had chocolate inside or if they were just fruit-flavoured. I nearly bought a pack in about 2003 from Blockbuster (Video, now presumably, DVD store)... however, I had an ulterior motive which is, I play the card game 'bridge' and one of the 'conventions' played in my circle is ASTRO (actually a 'defence' to a 1 no trump opener) - I was going to pull out a pack of ASTROS the moment someone made this bid!
