Mothers day gifts

Once upon a time it was enough to make your own very special mothers day gifts. An old cereal box, a cardboard loo roll, some sticky back plastic, a few miles of double sided sticky tape and some colourful tissue paper – oh how we loved you Blue Peter! – and every little mummy’s boy and girl could create their truly, er, unique mothers day gifts. And regardless of what this cardboard/tissue paper thingumybob looked like, your mum had to smile and say thank you because you had made it yourself.

The next stage in Mothers Day Gifts

Then you grew up a little and decided that the best mothers day gifts were the ones that clearly said Mothers Day Gift. So for a few years, mum received teddies, cups, socks, t-shirts, beer mats, pens, postcards, washing up gloves etc emblazoned with Happy Mothers Day. These were tacky and cheesy but, again, mum smiled because you had gone to so much effort to find your Mothers day Gifts and spent all of your hard-earned pocket money.

The grown-ups’ Mothers Day Gifts

In the initial years after moving away from home your Mothers Day Gifts were large and generous. Huge bunches of flowers, massive boxes of chocolate, crates of wine and extravagant meals out. You most probably didn’t realise it at the time, but these OTT gifts were your subconscious way of making up for being a Nightmare of a Teenager. Mum grinned from ear-to-ear on receipt of these presents because she really, really liked them.

Now for the thinking son or daughter’s version of Mothers Day Gifts

And then came the time, like now, when you want to show your mum just how much you really love her but in a way that is different from last year (and not the same as you siblings). But everywhere you look is yet more tackiness and cheesiness and really all you want to say is “Thanks mum, you’re the sweetest, loveliest mother and here’s a gift that shows I care and think a lot about you.”

So buy her the “sweetest, loveliest” gift in the shape of a “thoughtful” selection of the sweets that she remembers as a child. As we all know, nostalgia and memories say so much and the chances are that the minute she unwraps her box or jar of childhood sweeties she’ll not only love what she sees but she’ll be taken back down memory lane to the day that you presented her with the most  unique of homemade mothers day gifts – that cereal box covered in sticky back plastic and little balls of colourful tissue paper!
